Vacation

i'll be on vacation tomorrow. I'm going to tunisia with my girlfriend for 2 weeks.
Really looking forward to some nice weather as the weather this summer in holland has been dreadfull.

Currently i'm up 12 buyins at lvl 3 of my challenge, i was up 14 at one point but then i got 2 big coolers. I really wanted to finish this lvl before my vacation but i guess it will have to wait now. i wish everyone all the best at the tables the comming weeks!

Stats from lvl 3 so far

I'm running extremely well so far. I know the sample size is small, but check out my stats:

winning 10 buyins in only 1700 hands is awesome. I hope i can keep this up another 850 hands at least :) I know it's impossible to keep this winrate up, but i'll do my best and enjoy the upswing while it lasts.

Who says you can't earn decent money with low stakes poker, check out my true win rate:

winning close to 60 bucks an hour is pretty good living if you ask me. And all of this with a MT ratio of only 2.66. I'm done bragging now, and i will try and finish this lvl this weekend at the latest.

My post about bet-sizing will be somewhere tomorrow hopefully.

Untill next post

All's going well

I've been away for a couple of days visiting my in-laws on vacation, hence the lack of updates. Been cycling a bit through the woods which was nice.

Poker has been a low priority past week, but i still managed to win 7 buy-ins into the third lvl of my challenge. At this point the bankroll of my challenge has passed the 900$ which is nice considering i started out with only 50$ not too long ago.

So far, the lvl of play at 50NL is somewhat better than i expected. It all comes down to who you're at the table with. There seem to be some decent players at this stake, but fortunately the lion share of players is still very weak.

Target these players when you are playing with them. Isolate them and try and substract as much money as possible.

I will make a post about sizing your bets in the next few days, which should be very helpfull to a lot of players.

lvl 2 analysis

I didn't find a lot of differences between 10nl and 25nl.
Therefor i would like to refer to my previous analysis of lvl 1 of my challenge
The main difference in my opninion is that there is a new kind of player. The nit...
The nit is usually a regular player, who plays a decent amount of hands.
The nit is tight, which means he only plays the best hands. AQ+ and all pocket pairs. With medium and low pairs he will be setmining and because the normal skill lvl is very low they usually win a fair amount of money, exploiting the weak play of others.
If you want to bluff at 25nl it should be against this type of player. Good players will exploit the nit by using aggression to their advantage. You will encounter this type of player up to 200nl so you should learn how to exploit them. But if you encounter a lot of nits at a table just look for a new table with plenty of fish, because nits don't let go of their money easily. You can easily beat them, but your winrate against fish will be a lot higher.
Nits are usually the players that win the money at these low stakes. If you are new to the game, playing this style of play isn't a bad idea to start out with, as long as you strive to expand your strategy in the future. If you want to keep improving your game that is.

As i said in my previous analysis, i can't stress enough how important it is to determine what type of player you are up against.
Weak players only look at their own hand, withouth thinking about what their opponent could have. Good players do think about that, and the best players even think about what they think, their opponents think they have. You could take this even further, but the important thing i want to point out is that you should think about these things when you play a hand, and why determining the type of opponent you're playing against, is key in doing this.

One type of player will pay you off with tptk ( top pair, top kicker), where as another type of player will use pot control and shut down once he encounters your resistance. Do you understand what i'm getting at? you will win a LOT more money against the first type if you play it right.

Stats and graph

Here are my stats for lvl 2:

as you can see i had to play a LOT of hands to finish this lvl. 3.38ptbb/100 is pretty bad considering the lvl of competition. I haven't been very aggressive, this is due to the fact that people tend to call you down extremely lightly. So you hardly have any fold-equity. Bluffing is often futile so i didn't do a lot of it.

I had a great start of the lvl but then i had a massive break-even stretch which lasted roughly 16k hands. During this time i was being slapped silly with bad beats and it took a lot of discipline not to start playing badly.

I've played some hands at lvl 3 and the competition seem to be ld be a bit better. Aggression is up which is usually a good indicator of a game's skill-lvl. I should bet getting more respect now so my aggression will be up aswell.
I'll probably post an analysis of the lvl somewhere tomorrow. I'm playing a game of golf later in the day so it will probably be around noonish.

Holland's Poker legislation

My government (the netherlands) has recently decided they are going to tax pokerwinnings as of Januari 2008. I dont have a problem with paying taxes but they want you to pay 40,85% taxes over your monthly winnings. This is totally absurd.
a group of poker-orginisations has started a petition so i urge every1 to sign the petition at http://www.pokerbond.nl/pokerpetitie/

let's hope we can get enough signatures to stop the madness!

lvl 2 of my challenge completed.... FINALLY

I've just completed lvl 2 of my challenge. This lvl has been a real pain as i had to play it during a huge downswing. I can't even count the bad beats i got, but i managed to keep my head cool ( mostly :) ) and play well. As a result it took me way too many hands to finish the lvl. Now i'm done, i can look back satisfied. I played well and earned 15x25= 375$ and cleared a 75$ reload bonus aswell which totals the earnings at 450$.

i'll post a lvl analysis shortly. I hope people can benefit from reading it and learn them how to beat the 25nl SH game.

Bad beats, bad beats... what you gonna do

I keep getting slapped around with bad beats. i just lost the hand that would have make me complete lvl 2 of my challenge due to a 2 outer.

Rarely do i play Aces like this, but it worked out great.... untill de river....

PS. i'm glad it's been a longtime since i had such a cold streak on my normal stakes.

Rough times

As a good poker player you often experience times when winning money with poker feels like the easiest thing in the world. I had such times when i won 8 buyins in a single day. But after good days come bad days, when even though you have the best hands you still don't win. Getting bad beats is part of poker. Especially if you are a good player as you usually go in with your money with the best hand.
I seldomly complaint about bad beats, because i know they are part of the game and when you get a bad beat you had the best hand when the money went in, so that's a good thing. As a good player i make money, because i get people to put their money in with a weaker hand than mine. Most of the times that will result in me taking their money, but sometimes it's the other way around and they suck out. So be it. In the long run i will crush them.
That being said, it can still be frustrating having the completing of lvl 2 of your challenge so close and feel it slip away due to a series of bad beats. Key at this point is to not let it affect your game. Play well, and eventually it will come your way. Have faith!

Here's some of the bad beats i got:

one

What can you do? there's no way i can get away from this hand. this was a dream flop for me and he managed to hit it with the garbage he was holding.
two

standard set vs overset. Nothing i can do. in this situation you are hoping villain has AA or AK which are far more likely than KK. just a cooler.

three

This guy hits a 4-outer on me, nothing i can do. Again just a cooler.

Let's hope on better fortune from now on!
